About the artwork style
Advancements in printing technology during the late 1800s helped give rise to a new era of poster art through stone lithography. What began primarily as commercial advertising quickly evolved into a celebrated art form across Europe and helped lay the foundation for the vintage and mid-century poster aesthetic we admire today.
Although this style flourished internationally for decades, Hawai‘i largely missed the era of large-format advertising posters. In 1912, a group of women who would later form The Outdoor Circle began advocating to protect the Islands’ natural beauty from outdoor advertising and billboards. As a result, much of Hawai‘i’s vintage commercial artwork from this era survives in smaller formats such as magazine advertisements, luggage labels, travel brochures, and matchbook covers. My work draws inspiration from this tradition while imagining what large-format Hawaiian poster art from that era might have looked like.
How is the artwork created?
Each piece is hand-drawn digitally using layering techniques, brushes, textures, and methods inspired by traditional stone lithography. Before the final edition is produced, the artwork goes through a series of test prints known as artist’s proofs. These proofs allow me to carefully evaluate color, texture, contrast, and detail before approving the final edition.
The artwork is built using carefully selected spot colors, overlays, and screened textures to create a harmonious palette reminiscent of vintage lithographic printing. The final piece is produced using a 12-color giclée printing process on premium Hahnemühle 310 gsm, 100% cotton, museum-grade paper. The result is a museum-quality piece with a wide color gamut, rich tones, subtle texture, and exceptionally dense blacks.
Can I choose a different frame?
Yes. Because each piece is framed to order, custom framing is available. I have selected a specific frame for each artwork based on the color, style, and overall presentation of the piece, but I’m happy to discuss other framing options if you prefer something different for your space. Please contact me after placing your order to explore a custom frame options.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. International shipping is available. To help reduce shipping costs and protect the artwork during transit, international orders are shipped unframed in a large protective tube. Please contact me for international pricing, shipping details, and available options before placing your order.
Can I see the work in person?
